Neighborhood Marvels Presentation
Eye of Avik
My most recent studio is Neighborhood Marvels, we talked to many people who are heroes to their
neighborhood. We made a product for them that highlighted their qualities, with about 10% magic, or
we did not have enough time to finish everything. This is Dr. Avik Chatterjee, he is the client that my
partner and I chose.
He works for the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program.
He has two main problems in his work, firstly, he treats the same people for weeks, or months, and
then one day, without warning, they just disappear.
His second problem is the people in the Congress making bad policies against his clients.
We wanted to combine both ideas, Hypnosis, and finding.
For the first prototype, we made hypnosis goggles that are put over the victim’s head to hypnotize
them. They use flashing lights, which is a type of hypnosis.
This is our second prototype which is a compass which points in the direction of whoever he is trying
to find.
This is the combination of the two previous ideas, this is a compass that flashes different colors and
also points towards whoever he is trying to find.
After this, we took some design inspiration from the Eye of Agamotto, from Dr. Strange.
There are two different modes, finding and hypnosis. When in finding mode you turn until the layers
align and the light below shines through.
When in hypnosis mode, the layers spin, the light below flashes and the victim is hypnotized.
The main problem with our project is that we had to have multiple different rings, spinning around the
same axle. We got around this by having one axle connected to a servo, with another hollow axle
around the outside of the smaller one.
This is the first 3D print of the double axle. It didn’t come out well, and we also did not have enough
time to reprint it, so the final does not actually spin with a servo.
This is the way we put everything together.
This is the way the final spins
This is our final cardboard prototype.

These were all of the prototypes we went through.
Our final product.
Wow, Charlie: I love this project because of its connection to the community and because of your design! It appears very sophisticated to me as someone who has never built anything and I don't understand the two axle solution tot he multiple spinning rings, YET. I will look forward to you explaining this to me this week.
ReplyDeleteI am wondering about the hypnosis portion of the project: is that to hypnotize lawmakers into making better decisions about healthcare? And I'm also unsure about the "10% magic" cited in the first slide.
I love seeing your work, reading your writing and developing a better understanding of the design process as implemented at NuVu. I wonder if you can see how much you are learning in both the process and by writing about it, including inserting little videos into the blog.
Already looking forward to reading the next post.
I am getting sleepy
ReplyDeleteSeriously - what a great project! What will be the first issue to test this on?
