The Green Orb

One night, Millie was up late reading in bed. She finished the book she was reading and looked over to her shelves to see what else she might read before she went to bed. Right there on her shelf was something she had never seen before. It was a blue bottle... she picked it up, carefully... she was surprised how heavy it was...

She looked down into the bottle, but it was too dark inside to see anything, so she shook it.  There WAS something inside... Millie shook harder and harder.  Finally something small fell onto the floor.  It was a...

.. a ball of some sort. Sitting on the red rug, Millie could easily see now that it was a small green crystal.  She bent down to pick it up and as soon as her skin touched it, the ball started to glow.  The ball slowly grew bigger and bigger, until it was as big as her hand.  All of sudden, she started to spin and spin and spin and her room began to disappear.  Instead of her red rug, the floor was white stone and she was sitting on the cliff edge of a steep mountain.  Millie didn’t know where she was or what happened, but she knew that she wasn’t anywhere near her home.

Now Millie knew this wasn’t any ordinary crystal.  It was a magic orb.  She looked back behind her and there was a small hole that she could fit through.  She was tired, so she clamored inside.  The hole was bigger than she had thought it would be -- it was about 7 feet long and 4 feet high.  The floor was not hard stone, but soft moss. There she fell asleep for a few hours.

All of a sudden, Millie woke up to a very loud roar and a swoosh of humongous winds.  She crawled up to the entrance, very cautiously and quietly and peeked out.  She saw a griffin fighting a huge lizard-like animal. So she crawled as fast as she could back into the hole to wait until they had stopped fighting.  She felt scared that she wouldn’t be able to get out and find something to eat or drink.

As soon as everything was silent, she crawled out, looked around and started to climb down the mountain.  She found that there was a pathway that started at the bottom and continued to the very top of the mountain.  So she reached for her pocket, but instead of pockets, she had a little leather handbag.  She opened it up and saw the green orb. She quickly closed the flap, then started her long walk to the bottom.  It took her about half an hour to get to the very bottom, then she saw a big spring with banana trees, grape vines, peanuts, lettuce, carrots, mangoes, clementines, strawberries -- every fruit, nut and vegetable that you could imagine.  So Millie helped herself and ate until she couldn’t eat one bite more.

Sitting there, she took out the beautiful green orb, staring at it for a little while, wondering how this beautiful orb had come into her life.  Millie then looked around and she was surprised to see a table in the center of the spring.  It was a stone table with three other orbs on it: one was red, one was white, one was blue.  They were sitting in a square, with one piece left out.  Millie decided that across from the white one is where the green orb should go. She waded in the water and placed the green orb in the small bowl where it fit exactly.  As soon as she let go of it, four bowl tops instantly appeared in the center of the table.  Millie took each of them and saw that on the top there was a small bit of each crystal embedded into the top.  So she put the tops on all the bowls.  A small sphere started to appear in the center of all four of the orbs. It was half black and half white.  MIllie picked it up, then started to spin.  Then there was no more water.  Under her feet was the soft red rug again.  She laid down in her bed and fell asleep.
