A day in the country of england

My grandmother and I woke up early on Monday morning to see our friend Jack. Jack lives in a house out in the country of England in a place called Didlington Manor.

This is an old ruin on the property of Didlington. Back when this was not a ruin, the people used to drink tea on the porch of this tower.

As Jack and I were walking around we saw a tree that had been blown down during a storm and I wanted to see if we could stand on it.

This used to be an ice cellar until it was overrun by nettle plants.

We found this barn owl and decided to follow it into this shed.

This is the second ruin in Didlington that we saw. Jack sometimes now uses it for a nice barbecue.
After Jack and I had walked around the forest and seen almost everything, we finished making the Passover brisket that we had put in the oven before our walk. After this Baba and I took the train back to kings cross, and The Underground back to our house.

  1. Well, Charlie, you seem to have run the gamut where population is concerned. Two years ago you visited China (population 1.4 billion). And today you stopped off in Didlington, which, according to Wikipedia, has a population of 48. Didlington has so few folks that when something falls into ruin, there aren't enough people around to tear it down. I enjoyed looking at the brick tower and the row of stone columns. If Didlington had more people, some developers would come along and turn them into condos. It happens in Somerville all the time.

  2. I love Roger's additional population information of Didlington -- 48 people! How does Jack like such a small little village?! It looks so incredibly beautiful... I, too, would love to walk those fields and forests as an antidote to our fast city living.

  3. Hey Charlie! It's Mr. Garton! Really enjoying your blog and impressions of England. Ham and cress bap looks delicious. Last time I was in the UK I enjoyed a chip bap, which was way better than it sounds. Looks like you've had brilliant weather and a wonderful visit! YES!
